Barbara Kasten is perhaps best known for her large-scale photographs of well known architectural sites. Her recent works focus on the artifacts of ancient cultures.
The work featured here includes examples of these archaeological investigations: Greek Tanagra Goddesses and funerary amulets from the temples of Guerro, Mexico. The diminutive Tanagra Goddess figurines were placed in the burial chambers of women to serve as their guides in the after life. Similarly, the small Pre-Colombian carved temples assured their owner of a resting place in the after world.
With the use of color, light and focus, Kasten has reinterpreted these objects and presents them as clues by which one may construct history and interpret the past.
Barbara Kasten is represented in many public collections around the world including: Art Institute of Chicago, Art Tower Mito Contemporary Art Gallery, Mito, Japan, Centro Cultural Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City, Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania, International Center of Photography, New York, International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, Lodz, Poland, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego.
