Born in Hong Kong, Tseng Kwong Chi left the English protectorate in his formative years and ended up living and studying in both Vancouver, B.C. and Paris. In 1979 Tseng moved and settled in New York. Not long after his arrival he met and befriended many luminaries of the local art and performance scene, including Kenny Scharf, Ann Magnuson, John Sex and, in particular, Keith Haring. Later on, Tseng became the photo-chronicler of Haring's numerous public paintings/graffiti works, colorings everywhere from the New York subway to the Berlin Wall Mural. Their bond of friendship was forged in their having a kin philosophy which pertained to a belief in the connection between art making and performance.

The S K Josefsberg Studio will be showing Tseng Kwong Chi's most renown photographic series, the "Expeditionary Series". Also known as the "East Meets West" Series, this body of work was initiated in 1979 when Tseng first visited Provincetown. There, he first donned his improvised persona of the mysterious Asian ambassador. Wearing a Mao uniform, sunglasses and official "visitors" photo ID which bore the stamp "Slutforart", Tseng began circulating the New York social scene, infiltrating high-society soirees and fundraising events. Mingling amidst the crowd as an assumed cultural emissary, he would ask guests to pose with him in front of his camera. The more renowned images from the series are those self-portraits taken in front of the world's most recognized monuments뾣rom the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the great Buddha in Kamakura, Japan and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. Fleshing out the series, Tseng traveled to Japan, Europe, South America and throughout the United States and Canada, and was often accompanied by his close friend Keith Haring.
Because Tseng associated his photographic work with performance, he preferred a large print format?6 x 36 inches. The gallery will accommodate a handful of the oversized prints and augment the breadth of the series with 16 x 20 inch prints.

Tseng Kwong Chi continued to develop the "Expeditionary Series" until his untimely death from AIDS in 1990.
